Lunar Drift

A brief crack at video game UI

Growing up I've always wanted to work in game development and design. When I first thought about getting into game dev, I thought I would be working with the actual game design and story telling-- and it turns out that UI has a huge impact on both of those things. The UI in a game can be a complete game-changer (pun intended) when it comes to building an atmosphere and creating a sense of immersion. I really wanted to capture that concept here in the design for this space-themed videogame.

Splash screen

The first thing that was important to me was picking a font that felt space-age but was simple to read. And from there I created the games logo, including customizing the font for the word "DRIFT" to look like it's glitching. Then I started work on some UI elements like the title screen buttons.

Title Screen

I really wanted the buttons to resemble an old-school monitor with the scan lines and all. After that I added some glow to make the buttons feel like they were back-lit. Something was missing though, the image in the background felt.... plain. I decided to bring the scan lines up across the full screen for the splash and title screens to really set the mood.
